Rapper Vanilla Ice, whose birth name is Robert Van Winkle, has defended his decision to perform at the Great American State Fair as part of the America 250 celebration, even as other artists withdrew from scheduled performances. Van Winkle stated that his participation is intended to foster unity and honor military and first responders, rather than to engage in political discourse.
During an appearance on "The Ingraham Angle," Van Winkle emphasized that the event, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, is about bringing Americans together. "It's called the United States, and this event is made to be united, to unite us," he told Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo. "And that's what this is about, you know, not the politics and everything. It's really about an entertainer coming to entertain all the people of America for the birthday of America."
Van Winkle expressed that it is a "huge honor" for him to perform at an event marking the nation's birthday. He highlighted that the primary focus of his performance would be to honor the military, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force, as well as police, EMS, and firefighters. "I'm here to honor them and say thank you for getting us here, 250 years, in this greatest country on the planet. And I'm proud to be an American and honored to be part of this event," he added.
The America 250 celebration, supported by the Freedom 250 initiative, is planned to span various Washington landmarks through July 10, 2026. The broader program includes military flyovers, concerts, food exhibits, and state-themed installations. Organizers describe the nationwide programming as a significant effort to unite Americans ahead of the country's semi-quincentennial anniversary.
While Van Winkle's performance at the National Mall was ultimately canceled due to inclement weather, it remains unclear if his participation in the Great American State Fair will be rescheduled. The event itself is intended to feature food, games, and historic exhibits.
Van Winkle also shared a lighthearted moment during his interview, demonstrating the "Running Man" dance, underscoring a festive atmosphere amidst the surrounding discussions.
