Value Picks Emerge for Fantasy Football Week 1

For season-long fantasy football leagues, Week 1 lineup decisions are generally straightforward, emphasizing elite talent acquired through draft capital. However, the landscape shifts for daily fantasy sports (DFS), where identifying value plays is crucial to affording highly drafted players.

In the quarterback position, the New Orleans Saints' Tyler Shough is highlighted as a potential value. Game scripts suggest the Detroit Lions may focus on their ground game, leading to a pass-heavy approach for a discounted Shough against a secondary missing key personnel, including safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph.

This secondary vulnerability in Detroit also presents opportunities for other Saints players. Wide receiver DeVaughn Vele and tight end Juwan Johnson are noted as low-cost stacking options.

At running back, Green Bay Packers' MarShawn Lloyd is identified as a target due to DFS pricing that locks in ahead of schedule. With Josh Jacobs on the Commissioner's Exempt List, Lloyd is expected to be the primary ball carrier in a run-focused system. This volume is anticipated to be significant as the Packers aim to establish their ground game against the Minnesota Vikings' defense.

Another value opportunity arises with the Las Vegas Raiders' tight end Brock Bowers, who recently underwent knee surgery and is expected to miss several games. This absence elevates fourth-year tight end Michael Mayer into an expanded starting role. Mayer demonstrated his ability to command targets and produce when given more opportunities last season with Bowers sidelined.

With a less experienced receiving corps around him, veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins is expected to rely heavily on Mayer as a safety net. Mayer's availability at a budget-friendly price, before his increased role was fully reflected in DFS pricing, positions him as a key roster piece that can unlock spending on other star players. Incorporating these value selections can provide the financial flexibility needed to roster top-tier players in favorable matchups for Week 1 DFS contests.
