The United States has waived a 10% levy on Scotch whisky imports, a decision welcomed by the Scottish government. The tariff had been a point of contention, impacting businesses and workers on both sides of the Atlantic.
First Minister John Swinney stated that the lifting of the levy is a "win for Scotland and a win for the United States," benefiting not only whisky producers but also the wider supply chain and communities supporting the sector.
Swinney indicated that the issue was raised with President Donald Trump during a previous meeting in the Oval Office. He attributed the resolution to the "remarkable contribution of the King" and a collaborative "Team Scotland" effort. This approach involved partnering with the U.S. bourbon industry and ensuring the matter was placed on Trump's agenda. The announcement of the tariff's removal came after King Charles's state visit to the United States.
President Trump had initially announced his intention to drop the whisky tariffs in April, which led to a public discussion about credit for the change. Swinney's comments highlight a multi-faceted effort involving diplomatic engagement and industry collaboration to achieve the tariff repeal.
