The United States has initiated what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as the "single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary," unleashing what he termed "economic D-Day" sanctions against Iran on Monday. Bessent stated these measures are designed to "collapse the regime."
The announcement follows previous remarks by Bessent on CNBC, where he indicated that the U.S. would impose the "toughest sanctions in history" on Iran. President Trump had previously warned that any nation providing a "lifeline" to Iran would face its own economic repercussions.
According to Bessent's social media post on Sunday night, President Trump's administration has already dismantled Iran's military capabilities, destroyed approximately 100 percent of its military factories, and halted its nuclear program. He characterized the current actions as entering the "endgame" with the commencement of the economic offensive.
Iran had previously pledged "crushing, punishing and devastating" consequences should the U.S. proceed with its planned sanctions. Bessent, however, appeared to dismiss this threat, stating in his social media post that the Islamic Republic has historically relied on a perception that Iranian retaliation is certain and American enforcement is negotiable. He asserted that "under President Trump, that era is over" and cautioned that those who fear defying Tehran should not discount the cost of testing Washington.
