The United States Mint has introduced a new half-dollar coin to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, an announcement made on the eve of the milestone. The coin, officially named the Semiquincentennial Enduring Liberty Half Dollar, bears the inscription "NEVER FORGET," a phrase that became a unifying message for Americans following the tragedy.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that as the 25th anniversary approaches, the coin honors the memory of those lost and the bravery of first responders. "A quarter century later, our promise to the victims and their families remains the same: we will never forget," Bessent said in a statement.
The coin's design features a prominent image of Lady Liberty, with the date of the attacks circled by the "NEVER FORGET" motto. The reverse side depicts Liberty passing a torch to a new generation, accompanied by the inscriptions "E pluribus unum," "Half Dollar," and "Knowledge is the only guardian of true liberty."
Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the coins are available for pre-order on the US Mint's website until September 25. According to the Treasury Department, shipping is expected to begin on December 3. A 20-coin roll is priced at $40, and a 100-coin bag costs $100.
This release follows the US Mint's recent rollout of $1 coins featuring President Trump's image to mark the nation's 250th birthday. Those coins display a portrait of the president with the inscriptions "liberty" and "in God we trust," along with the years "1776 ~ 2026." The other side features the presidential seal.
Communities across the nation are preparing to observe the anniversary. New York City has hosted numerous events this week, including a new remembrance wall dedicated by the NYPD. The annual ceremony at Ground Zero is scheduled for Friday morning. President Trump is expected to deliver remarks at the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, while the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, will also hold its annual observance.
