The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico have issued a warning restricting government travel and activities in Nogales, Sonora, due to an unspecified threat. Officials stated that U.S. government employees are now limited to essential movement only during daylight hours.
Sonora’s State Security Board confirmed they were contacted by U.S. consular officials following the alert. However, state authorities reported having no information that identified a specific threat or established a concrete risk to the public, though they stated that preventive security operations would continue in Nogales.
The advisory also reminded U.S. citizens that Sonora is designated as a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” area under the U.S. Travel Advisory.
Americans in the region are advised to exercise increased caution, remain aware of their surroundings, seek shelter if an incident occurs, inform friends and family of their safety, follow instructions from Mexican law enforcement, and monitor local media for updates.
Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., urged individuals in or near Nogales, including those with family or friends in the area, to heed the guidance provided by the U.S. government. He also expressed prayers for the safety of U.S. citizens and personnel who might be in harm's way.
The specific nature of the threat that prompted the security warning in Nogales remains unclear.
