The U.S. military is dispatching approximately 9,000 troops aboard a group of ships to the Middle East, a U.S. official confirmed on Thursday. This reinforcement of American military presence occurs as President Donald Trump has warned anew that new strikes against Iran may be imminent.
The troop movement, which includes a third aircraft carrier, highlights the rapidly shifting dynamics of the U.S. approach to Iran, particularly as midterm elections approach and new indicators suggest the conflict's nature may be becoming more complex.
Trump has indicated that an escalation after the midterm elections remains a possibility, despite earlier assurances of a conflict that would last only weeks. Further complicating the situation, Trump stated Thursday that initial findings suggest a link between Iran and the FlyDubai co-pilot who attacked his captain and attempted to crash an Israel-bound flight on Wednesday.
When questioned by reporters at the White House about potential links between the pilot and Tehran, Trump responded, “I would say the answer, based on what I’m hearing, is ‘yes,’ but we’re working on it right now,” without providing specific details.
Trump further stated that if a link to Iran is established, the United States would retaliate. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had claimed earlier on Thursday in a Fox News interview that investigators believe the FlyDubai suspect underwent “Islamist, radical indoctrination,” though he offered no further evidence.
“Oh, they’ll be hit very hard, don’t worry,” Trump said. “You just ask them. They know what happened. They’ll be hit very hard.”
Thousands Of US Sailors And Marines Head To The Middle East
The group of ships en route to the Middle East collectively carries over 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines. This contingent includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group, along with the cruiser USS Chosin, and the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group, which comprises the USS John P. Murtha and USS Anchorage amphibious landing ships.
This deployment could result in three aircraft carriers being in the region by the end of October, according to the U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military operations. Combined with existing personnel, this would bring the U.S. naval presence to over 20,000 sailors and Marines, along with hundreds of aircraft. The Navy had previously positioned three carrier strike groups in the Middle East in April, marking the first time since 2003.
The carriers USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington are currently in the region, alongside the USS Boxer amphibious readiness group. The USS Washington was redeployed to the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, whose extended deployment resulted in its crew being at sea for over 260 consecutive days.
Trump Explains Why He Rejected Iran’s Latest Truce Proposal
In an interview with Time magazine published Thursday, Trump also discussed the potential for new strikes, stating that an escalation of bombing in Iran after the Nov. 3 U.S. elections is “possible.” He declined to provide further details on his strategy, stating, “I can’t tell you that because look, you know, you’re asking, where are you going to bomb?”
During the interview, conducted on Monday, Trump explained that he rejected Iran’s most recent ceasefire proposal because “things that I wouldn’t have approved a year ago I wouldn’t have today.” He cited an Iranian offer to “open up” the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy shipping route, but deemed the overall proposal “not good enough.”
The War Shows Signs Of Getting More Complicated
When asked if the increasingly unpopular war could impact Republican chances in the upcoming elections, Trump initially responded, “It’s possible.” He then added, “It should help, because Iran will not have a nuclear weapon.” He asserted that “100% of the people” globally oppose Iran possessing nuclear weapons. “So, when you say it that way, it would help. If you don’t say that, it could hurt,” Trump stated.
However, there is growing concern that Tehran might be resorting to asymmetrical tactics, particularly following the FlyDubai incident and another security event in the United Kingdom. Authorities suspect Iran may be shifting its strategy even as the U.S. achieves greater success in restricting Iran's influence over the Strait of Hormuz and facilitating oil exports from allied Gulf nations, while a naval blockade curtails Iran’s own oil exports.
British authorities announced on Thursday the arrest of a dual U.K.-Iranian national on suspicion of plotting a terror attack. This followed a security incident at a U.S.-operated military air base in England, which British authorities have linked to Tehran. The arrest of the 27-year-old man in Central London occurred after U.K. authorities apprehended five men, all British nationals in their 20s from London, on suspicion of explosives and terror offenses near RAF Fairford, an air base used by American bombers to strike Iran. The suspects have since been released on bail.
