Derek Phillips, a business analytics student and member of the Hawkeye Marching Band, was taken off life support on Tuesday after collapsing during the University of Iowa's opening football game on Saturday. His family confirmed the devastating news in a statement posted to his Instagram account.
Phillips collapsed at Kinnick Stadium during the game against the Northern Illinois Huskies, with temperatures reaching 91 degrees Fahrenheit and a heat index of 102 degrees. Despite the efforts of the intensive care unit team at the University of Iowa Hospital, the damage to his brain was deemed too severe, leading his family to make the decision to remove life support.
"Derek is comfortable, surrounded by family, and enveloped in the music he loved so much," his family stated. They expressed gratitude for the prayers and support received.
The University of Iowa issued a statement expressing condolences and support for Phillips' loved ones. "The entire Hawkeye Marching Band family is thinking of Derek Phillips and his loved ones," the university said. "This is heartbreaking for everyone who cares for him. The university is in close contact and is offering support. Both the HMB and School of Music have counselors on-site for students this week. HMB director Eric Bush has shared resources with the band community and is encouraging anyone who needs support to seek assistance."
The stadium was sold out for the game, with 69,250 tickets sold. The university had implemented measures to combat the heat, including distributing 4,000 water bottles and expanding first-aid resources. However, during the first half of the game, the marching band's halftime performance was canceled due to the extreme weather conditions. The Iowa Spirit Squads also took a break.
Phillips had recently returned to Iowa for his third year after what his family described as a fulfilling summer touring with a drum and bugle corps. The Hawkeyes won the game against Northern Illinois with a score of 40-0.
