Universal Studios Theme Park Set to Boost UK Economy by £50 Billion

The Universal UK Resort, slated for a 2031 opening, has revealed the list of companies involved in bringing the attraction to life, signaling substantial involvement from British firms in its planning and construction phases.

Situated in Kempston Hardwick, near Bedford, this will be Universal's first major resort in the UK and Europe. The project is anticipated to generate thousands of jobs and contribute approximately £50 billion to the UK economy. The 540-acre resort is expected to feature rides inspired by popular franchises such as Jurassic World, James Bond, and Paddington.

Project Scope and Investment

In its inaugural year, the park is projected to attract 8.5 million visitors, potentially making it the UK's most frequented theme park. Key construction support has been secured from companies including Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd and Wates Construction Ltd, alongside UK-based firms DWD Property and Planning Ltd and LDA Design Consulting Ltd.

The resort will include a 500-room hotel alongside its rides and attractions. This development represents one of the largest investments in the UK tourism sector, with £5 billion allocated for construction and an additional £2.2 billion earmarked for ongoing operational expenses post-opening. The UK government is also contributing £1.3 billion towards regional and local community infrastructure, including improvements to transport links for both residents and visitors.

Job Creation and Park Design

Overall, the theme park aims to create 28,000 jobs across various sectors, including construction, hospitality, creative industries, and technology. Eighty percent of the workforce is expected to be recruited from the local Bedfordshire area.

The resort's design includes a grand tree-lined boulevard for vehicular access and a dedicated transport hub for public transit users. Visitors will enter through a plaza featuring restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues, with ticketed guests proceeding into the main park via a signature Universal archway.

The park itself will be organized into four primary zones: the Core Zone, envisioned as the central hub potentially housing the theme park, a water park, and an amusement park; the Lake Zone, which will feature a new wetland habitat, business hotels with 2,000 rooms, and supporting entertainment facilities; the East Gateway Zone, situated near the future Wixams Rail Station to serve as a key entry point for train travelers; and the West Gateway Zone, which will accommodate a 200-room hotel, a petrol station, restaurants, and additional entertainment spaces.

Universal also plans to incorporate music and dance venues, nightclubs, tattoo parlors, and event spaces for shows and parades. The site will provide extensive parking facilities, including over 7,100 car spaces, 100 coach bays, and 250 cycle spaces.
