United Airlines has introduced a new "Twilight" baggage drop service at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, allowing passengers with early morning flights to check their luggage the evening before their departure. This initiative is designed to streamline the airport experience by enabling travelers to proceed directly to security upon their return to the airport.
The service is currently available only to passengers flying out of Chicago between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. Travelers must drop their bags at the airport between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. the night prior to their flight. United stated that the program aims to alleviate the stress of the morning rush and provide a smoother start to journeys.
Chicago O'Hare is a significant hub for United Airlines. The rollout coincides with a busy travel period, with the Chicago Department of Aviation anticipating over 1.6 million passengers between July 1 and July 6, an increase from the previous year.
While the "Twilight Bag Drop" is intended to save passengers time, some travelers have noted potential drawbacks. Concerns have been raised about the requirement to make two trips to the airport and the restriction that passengers cannot park on the arrival road to drop off luggage, indicating it is a drop-off only service.
The concept of checking luggage the night before an early flight is established at many international airports, particularly in Europe and Australia. United is among the first major U.S. airlines to pilot this approach domestically. The airline has not yet announced plans for expansion to other airports.
During a trial phase, the airline reportedly processed approximately 1,600 bags. Passengers have expressed positive reactions to the concept, with some noting its potential benefits for families traveling with young children, citing the difficulty of managing both children and multiple bags during busy travel times. The airline operates flights to over 350 destinations across six continents.
