Russian air defenses intercepted at least 201 Ukrainian drones overnight and into Sunday morning, according to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, marking what appeared to be the largest wave of drone attacks on the Russian capital during the war. Sobyanin stated that approximately 600 drones were launched toward Moscow between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
While Sobyanin reported no immediate damage or casualties, Moscow's regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov noted that one person died in the Ramensky district when a drone struck a residential property. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed to have downed a total of 822 Ukrainian drones across 16 Russian regions, occupied Crimea, the Sea of Azov, and the Black Sea. Additional fatalities were reported in other regions, with five people killed in the Rostov region and one in the Belgorod region.
Ukraine also targeted facilities belonging to the Russian e-commerce company Wildberries. The company confirmed a fire at a warehouse in Podolsk, located south of Moscow. The Ukrainian missile and drone production company Fire Point claimed responsibility for attacking a Wildberries logistics hub in Kolyadino, Podolsk.
In response to the drone activity, Russia's federal air transport agency, Rosaviatsiya, imposed temporary flight restrictions at airports in Kaluga, Tambov, Gelendzhik, and Sochi, as well as at Moscow's Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky international airports.
Concurrently, Russia continued its long-range strike campaign against Ukraine. Ukraine's air force reported that Russian forces launched multiple missiles and 106 drones into the country, with 85 of the drones and three missiles being intercepted. Russian munitions impacted 13 locations across Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that at least six people were injured in Kyiv and its surrounding region. Two people were killed in his home city of Kryvyi Rih, one in Sumy, and two in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to local officials. Zelenskyy reiterated his appeal to foreign partners for increased air defense munitions, stating that "Protecting lives is essential. Russia must be stopped. New aid packages represent, quite literally, lives saved and infrastructure protected every day."
Amid the exchange, a drone reportedly crossed into NATO airspace in Romania from the direction of Moldova. The Romanian Ministry of Defense confirmed that a Spanish F-18 fighter jet tracked and shot down the aircraft.
