A Ukrainian drone strike on a refinery in Russia's Tatarstan region has resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals and left 39 others wounded, marking one of Kyiv's most lethal single attacks in the ongoing conflict. The strike targeted the TANECO refinery in Nizhnekamsk, a facility described as technologically advanced and a significant contributor to Russia's fuel production.
Radmir Belyayev, the mayor of Nizhnekamsk, confirmed the casualty figures and the attack on the refinery. State media reports indicated that the refinery was the target of the assault. Unverified social media videos depicted smoke rising from the facility, consistent with an attack on an industrial site.
The TANECO refinery, previously targeted by Ukraine in early June, processed approximately 17 million tons of crude oil in 2024. Its output included 2.7 million tons of gasoline and 8.5 million tons of diesel fuel. The Tatarstan head, Rustam Minnikhanov, has declared a period of mourning in response to the incident.
This attack is part of a broader Ukrainian campaign targeting Russian oil refineries. In recent months, these strikes have aimed to disrupt fuel supplies across Russia. While authorities have stated that initial fuel shortages have largely been resolved, the repeated targeting of refineries underscores Ukraine's strategy to impact Russia's economy and war-making capabilities.
