Ukraine's Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has been dismissed from his post, a decision that triggered nationwide protests and warnings from troops about the potential impact on the ongoing conflict with Russia.
President Volodymyr Zelensky's administration confirmed the firing of Fedorov, who was appointed in January and credited with accelerating Ukraine's drone program. The move reportedly stemmed from a dispute between Fedorov and Ukraine's top military general, Oleksandr Syrskyi. Fedorov claimed that Syrskyi presented Zelensky with an ultimatum to either dismiss the defense minister or face his own resignation.
Fedorov stated that his efforts to advance Ukraine's military technology faced resistance from Syrskyi, leading to repeated requests from both officials for the other's removal. "The war has changed completely. Drones are changing everything, completely reshaping the architecture," Fedorov told reporters, emphasizing the need for the management system to adapt to evolving technologies.
Zelensky acknowledged that the personal relationship between the two officials was the cause of the government restructuring. "I would very much like to see unity. The sides have not found it," Zelensky said, explaining that he had to make a choice. "And the problem lies not only with the sides, but with me as well."
The decision led to public outcry, with hundreds protesting in Kyiv against what they perceived as political infighting during wartime. Some demonstrators called for Syrskyi's resignation as well.
Lt. Col. Denis Yaroslavsky, who commands Ukrainian assault forces, expressed dismay over the situation, calling it a significant blow to the country's military. Yaroslavsky suggested that Fedorov's technological expertise and Syrskyi's leadership experience could have formed a beneficial synergy. "Such synergy could have become a major advantage for the Armed Forces of Ukraine," he said. "Instead, any division at the highest level inevitably spreads downward, demoralizes the troops, weakens command and control, and, in wartime, may lead to irreversible consequences on the front line." Yaroslavsky added that "personal ambitions, grievances, and political calculations must be put aside. The army, the front line, and Ukraine’s victory must remain the highest priority."
Following Fedorov's dismissal, Yevhenii Khmara, acting head of Ukraine’s SBU domestic security service, was appointed as acting defense minister.
