Members of the British Armed Forces strategic reserve are scheduled to participate in a war preparation drill next year as part of government efforts to test national resilience. The exercise will simulate a scenario requiring the mobilization of retired military personnel.
Details regarding the number of veterans expected to take part remain undisclosed. The announcement comes amid concerns about the UK potentially being drawn into a broader conflict by 2030 and follows a reported drone attack by Russia on Leipzig airport in Germany.
Britain currently has approximately 71,000 full-time, trained troops available for deployment. The nation's Army has been reduced to its smallest size in over two centuries.
Armed Forces minister Louise Sandher-Jones stated that the strategic reserve represents a genuine commitment for its members and that they will be exercised next year. The procedures for calling out, utilizing, equipping, and other necessary steps for the proper use of the strategic reserve will be reviewed. Sandher-Jones, a veteran herself, noted that former service members have been underutilized in recent years, contrasting with her own experience of filing away her strategic reserve status without further thought.
Under existing legislation, the Ministry of Defence is obligated to maintain contact with former military personnel for six years after their departure from full-time service. However, Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, author of a strategic defense review, raised concerns in April that defense officials had lost track of veterans on recall lists. He urged the government to identify and assemble available, fit, and willing individuals.
The call-up for British Army veterans occurs as Labour faces scrutiny over its defense spending commitments. Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey has not guaranteed an increase to 3% of GDP for defense by the end of the decade. Cost-saving measures implemented by the current government have already led to the cancellation of training exercises and military drills for professional troops.
