The Uckfield Bonfire and Carnival Society has canceled a traditional torchlit procession, a nearly 200-year-old event in Uckfield, East Sussex, due to wildfire fears. The decision, made after weeks of dry weather, also includes the cancellation of the traditional fireworks display that traditionally kicks off the town's weekend of celebrations.

Organizers stated that the event, which dates back to 1220, would not be covered by their insurers because of the increased fire risk. This follows a government emergency announcement on August 14, which warned of heightened fire risks after a period of hot weather. The society consulted with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service before making its decision.

"The Government Emergency announcement is still current and as such our insurers have confirmed that our use of torches in the procession will not be insured," the society said in a statement. "Uckfield Bonfire & Carnival Society have made the decision to cancel the Firework Display on Friday night and will not be using the traditional torches in the procession on Saturday night to minimise the risk of harm to the town."

Despite these changes, the carnival itself is still scheduled to proceed on September 4 and 5. Organizers are encouraging residents to participate by bringing battery-powered lanterns and fairy lights to illuminate the town instead of torches.

The society emphasized its duty of care and expressed hope that the community would continue to support the event, which is in its 199th year. "We ask people to respect our decision and remember that we are all volunteers trying to do the right thing. Carnival is still on please come and support us all," the statement read.

Other bonfire societies in Sussex have expressed support for Uckfield's decision, citing the importance of prioritizing community safety. "Stepping back from a long-standing tradition is never easy, but prioritising the safety and wellbeing of the community is always the right call," wrote Burgess Hill Bonfire Society in response to the announcement.
