Secondary school pupils in England will now have access to a broader range of technical subjects starting from year 10 as part of educational reforms spearheaded by the new Prime Minister. These courses are designed to align with local industry needs, offering students a more defined path toward employment.
The reforms are accompanied by a new bursary scheme intended to alleviate financial obstacles that may prevent young people from pursuing apprenticeships. Andy Burnham has expressed a commitment to strengthening the connections between educational institutions and the workplace.
This initiative was discussed by former education secretary Justine Greening, founder of the Purpose Coalition, and Shane Chowen, editor at FE Week, who examined whether these changes can effectively address youth unemployment. The discussion was part of a Newscast episode featuring presenter Adam Fleming.
