British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting stated that the United Kingdom should not be intimidated by Iran's recent threats, characterizing them as "sabre-rattling." He emphasized that the UK has not joined and will not join offensive U.S. military action against Iran.
"I think we shouldn't put too much stock in the sabre-rattling of Iran, and we certainly shouldn't be intimidated by what the regime has said this week," Streeting commented when asked about Iran's capability to attack the UK. He reiterated the UK's position, noting a disagreement with the United States on offensive actions but absolute alignment on securing maritime freedom and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Streeting indicated he would meet with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in the coming week to discuss ways "to bring the countries together," following a positive phone conversation. The UK, he added, is prepared to lead a naval mission to assist in removing mines from the Strait of Hormuz when conditions are suitable. The importance of securing these shipping routes was underscored by their impact on energy prices and the cost of living.
In a separate but related matter, Streeting dismissed a recent live-firing exercise by a Russian warship in the English Channel as "performative." He described the incident as a "reminder of the frankly unsafe and unprofessional way in which they have been conducting themselves" and labeled it "irresponsible." Streeting asserted that Russia poses a threat to UK security, highlighting the ongoing, often unseen, efforts to counter Russian aggression.
