The United Kingdom has announced sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank, a move aimed at deterring further expansion and specifically preventing development at the E1 site. These sanctions include a ban on importing goods from settlements deemed illegal under international law.

During a parliamentary address, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stated that the sanctions were necessary to "deter settlement expansion" and "prevent the development of E1." He further characterized the actions of some settlers as "ethnic cleansing" and accused "settler terrorists" of carrying out these acts, asserting that the Israeli government was "turning a blind eye."

Israel responded swiftly to the UK's announcement. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar declared that Israel would close the British consulate in Jerusalem, describing the UK government's actions as "hostile."

The disputed E1 site is located near Ma'ale Adumim, an existing Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank. Israel has recently opened tenders for approximately 1,200 new settlement homes at this proposed location. The BBC's Middle East correspondent Lucy Williamson reported from an area close to the proposed E1 site.
