The Green Party in the United Kingdom is reportedly developing proposals that would implement wartime-style rationing on essential goods and activities, including meat, dairy, petrol, and flights. These policies are being drafted by officials working for party leader Zack Polanski in anticipation of the party's annual conference this autumn. The proposals suggest state-controlled reductions, aiming for a 50 percent cut in personal driving mileage and a 70 percent reduction in flying miles.

The party has acknowledged that such rationing measures could evoke a "whiff of wartime" and attract significant public attention. One motion under consideration calls for the government to establish mechanisms for the equitable distribution of meat, dairy, petrol, diesel, and flights. Under this plan, individuals would be allocated a decreasing annual allowance, accompanied by additional environmental levies.

According to the party's Climate Emergency Policy Working Group, government ministers should prioritize a substantial reduction in leisure flying. While guaranteeing a decreasing allowance of petrol or diesel for road users, the group emphasizes that current levels of flying, driving, and meat and dairy consumption are unsustainable.

In parallel, allies of Labour leader Andy Burnham have reportedly initiated back-channel communications with the Green Party. These discussions are aimed at exploring a potential coalition agreement, possibly including the Liberal Democrats, should Burnham's Labour party fail to secure a majority in the upcoming General Election. These coalition discussions surface days after Polanski's involvement in an open letter calling for the monitoring of British-Israeli nationals who served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) over alleged "war crimes" committed during the conflict in Gaza.
