A taxpayer-funded exhibition in the United Kingdom has claimed that the children's toy character Funshine Bear is transgender, drawing criticism for what some describe as the sexualization of children's toys and the promotion of gender ideology. The exhibition, titled “Villiers Revealed” and supported by Arts Council England, a public body funded by the UK Government, highlighted the Care Bears franchise for having "queer resonance."
Organizers of the exhibition stated that Funshine Bear's characterization as transitioning sends a positive message to individuals undergoing similar changes. The character Funshine first appeared in the early 1980s and was voiced by female actors in early television adaptations. However, a male voice actor voiced the character in the 2004 film "Care Bears: Journey to Joke-a-Lot," which has contributed to online discussions about the character's gender.
The exhibition, developed by Culture Leicestershire, identified the bear as a "symbol for the LGBTQA+ community" and commended the franchise for "disrupting gender norms through their expression of their true selves but are accepted regardless."
Charities focused on children's welfare have criticized the exhibition's claims. The Family Education Trust posted on X that taxpayer money should not fund attempts to "sexualize children's toys and promote false gender ideology."
