Britain is confronting a potential beer shortage, with warnings issued that a summer of extreme heat has severely damaged the barley harvest, a critical ingredient for brewing. Lisa Hogan, partner of television presenter Jeremy Clarkson and co-owner of Diddly Squat Farm in Oxfordshire, stated that the poor yields threaten both the quantity and quality of beer produced.
Hogan suggested that consumers could face higher prices as suppliers struggle to meet demand. "If you have another bad harvest, you won't be able to supplement, say, by getting grain in from Poland," she explained. "So we just have to pay a higher cost, and then we have to try not to pass that on to the customer."
Figures from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit indicate that the total UK harvest plummeted to one of its lowest yields on record, with just over 19 million tons, a significant decrease from nearly 26 million tons in 2022. This represents a 19% drop below the five-year average, according to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board.
While last year's high temperatures also reduced beer production, Hogan noted that the quality of the harvest actually increased. However, this is not expected for the current year's crop.
The challenges extend to the farm's own popular Hawkstone beer, which recorded £44.9 million in sales in the year leading up to March. The beer is available in supermarkets and approximately 4,000 pubs nationwide.
Hogan has been exploring solutions to water scarcity, including the potential for reservoirs, and has praised government plans to facilitate their construction. In contrast, Jeremy Clarkson has expressed frustration with local government, anticipating a "very unhelpful government."
Clarkson himself had previously commented on the impact of the scorching summer on his farm's harvest, describing it as "f*****" and stating that planting crops like wheat or barley would have resulted in financial losses. He has warned that making money from growing food is becoming increasingly difficult.
Separately, Diddly Squat Farm recently experienced the theft of 11 sheep. Police are investigating the incident, with Clarkson expressing anger and concern about the potential for further livestock losses. The stolen sheep were reportedly featured in a series of his television show.
