A UC Santa Cruz student has been identified as the passenger who died when a car went over a cliff on Santa Cruz's West Cliff Drive early Thursday. Alli Renee Singh, 19, was preparing to start her third year at the university when the vehicle, driven by a male companion, fell from the coastline.

The crash occurred near Steamer Lane, a popular surf spot known for its rugged cliffs. Images from the scene show a red vehicle being lifted from the Pacific Ocean by a crane.

Singh's aunt, Monica Singh-Strohmeier, announced her niece's death on Facebook, describing her as "a very smart, beautiful and loving young lady and will be missed by all who crossed her path."

The Santa Cruz Fire Department, Central Fire District, Scotts Valley Fire, and Santa Cruz police responded to the incident, which happened around 12:50 a.m. Rescue swimmers attempted to save Singh, who was trapped inside the submerged car. The driver sustained minor injuries and was able to escape the vehicle.

UC Santa Cruz police were also notified. University spokesman Scott Hernandez-Jason stated, "We were heartbroken to learn that the victim was a UC Santa Cruz student. Our deepest condolences go out to the student’s family and friends during this difficult time. We are providing support resources to those affected by this tragedy."

West Cliff Drive is a well-known coastal area that attracts visitors, but the cliffs and waves can be hazardous. In February, a powerful wave near Steamer Lane capsized a small boat, sending its occupants into the water, where they were assisted by nearby surfers.
