Tyrese Maxey has likened himself to John Calipari, his former college coach, after reportedly playing a significant role in recruiting LeBron James to the Philadelphia 76ers.
News broke that James had agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with the 76ers while Maxey was working out. He shared a video reaction, proclaiming, “I’m like Coach Cal.” Calipari built his coaching reputation on securing elite recruits for his programs.
While Maxey lacks a recruiting staff and championship banners, he was instrumental in persuading the 41-year-old James to choose Philadelphia over other suitors. Both players are represented by Klutch Sports, and Maxey maintained contact with James throughout his free agency process.
Maxey's efforts helped the 76ers secure the NBA's all-time leading scorer, beating out the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and Minnesota Timberwolves. The pairing of Maxey and James is expected to bolster the 76ers' offense, particularly in transition. Last season, Maxey and James ranked first and second, respectively, in fast-break points, with Maxey scoring 382 and James finishing with 343.
Potential Starting Lineup
With James' addition, the 76ers are poised to field a powerful starting lineup that could include Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, James, and Joel Embiid. This group brings a blend of scoring, passing, athleticism, and playoff experience, positioning the team as a strong contender for an NBA title.
