Two women were shot in separate incidents near the route of the West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn on Monday afternoon, according to law-enforcement sources. These shootings added to violence that had already occurred earlier in the day.

The first shooting took place around 4 p.m. near 798 Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights, when a woman was struck in the leg, sources said. A witness at the scene described hearing rapid gunfire amidst a crowd that appeared to be fighting.

"There were a bunch of people fighting at the top of the block. ... And then all of the sudden, you hear, ‘Pop, pop,’" the witness, identified as Edward, told the New York Post.

Law enforcement apprehended a suspect at the scene of the first shooting.

Shortly after the first incident, a second woman was shot in the leg near the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue, also in Crown Heights. Sources indicated that law enforcement was still searching for the shooter in this second incident.

These shootings followed four stabbings that occurred hours earlier, just before the parade was scheduled to begin, near Carroll Street and Utica Avenue in the same neighborhood.
