Two people were killed and the suspect is dead following a shooting in a downtown Minneapolis apartment building Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

Three Minneapolis police officers sustained injuries during the incident, police Sgt. Garrett Parten stated at a press conference Wednesday evening. Two officers were wounded by gunfire, and all three are in stable condition, a hospital spokesperson confirmed.

One victim died at the scene of the shooting, and another succumbed to their injuries after arriving at Hennepin County Medical Center. In total, the medical center received seven patients, including the deceased individual.

Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots. Julius Bailey, a resident of the building, reported hearing eight shots and seeing a man he recognized as a resident holding a pistol. Bailey stated he had previously identified the individual as someone known to carry a weapon and had avoided him since moving into the building in June.

Another resident, Chris Miller, also heard a rapid succession of gunshots and sought safety outside the building. Miller indicated he believed he knew who was responsible for the shooting, having reported an encounter with an individual carrying a handgun in the hallway earlier in the week to building management.

Video circulating on social media depicted police officers aiming rifles toward an apartment tower near the Minneapolis Convention Center. Authorities advised the public to avoid the Loring Park neighborhood.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz confirmed that state officials were on the ground assisting local law enforcement. The FBI also stated it was responding and would provide necessary resources to local authorities. Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth expressed condolences for the victims and gratitude for the law enforcement response.
