Authorities in North Carolina have arrested a couple in connection with the deaths of two individuals whose decomposing bodies were discovered on a nature trail in Glen Alpine within days of each other.

Jamar Quarmaine Propst, 36, and Tosha Lee Lewis, also 36, were arrested on July 25, according to the Burke County Sheriff's Office. An arrest warrant had been issued for the pair earlier that day. They have each been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of felony conspiracy.

The first body was discovered on July 21 at the Mountain Nature Trail at Simpson Park. Later that same day, a second body was found on the same trail. The sheriff's office has identified one of the victims as Raheim McClain Murray, 31. The identity of the second victim has not yet been confirmed.

The Burke County Sheriff's Office has not yet determined a motive for the killings. Propst and Lewis, described by police as homeless, were denied bond. Several outlets have reported they are from Hickory, a town approximately 30 minutes from Glen Alpine.

If convicted, Propst and Lewis could face life in prison or the death penalty for the charges. They are scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Simpson Park, located in the rural town of Glen Alpine about 80 miles outside of Charlotte, features walking paths, playgrounds, and green spaces. The area is generally known for its low crime rates, which are reportedly 58 percent lower than the national average, according to Area Vibes.
