Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has publicly praised an aide to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for remarks that included a stated hope of "impoverishing the White middle-class." The comments by Cea Weaver, Mamdani's director of the Mayor's Office to Protect Tenants, were highlighted by comedian Bill Maher on his show "Real Time."

Piker, who has a significant following among progressive and left-leaning audiences, responded to Maher's segment by expressing strong admiration for Weaver, calling her "beast mode." He stated that he "love[s Weaver] so much" and that people surrounding Mamdani, including Weaver, are "oftentimes are so much cooler than he is."

Weaver, described as a longtime housing activist and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, previously made the controversial statement in a context where Maher questioned a belief in the government's "sacred right to seize property." Maher characterized Weaver's comments as indicative of a desire to "impoverish the White middle-class."

Former Clinton strategist James Carville has previously warned about the influence of the far-left within the Democratic Party, citing primary election results and the rhetoric employed by some progressive candidates. Carville has argued that mainstream Democrats need to oppose what he describes as radical socialist viewpoints to achieve electoral success.

Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who has previously been interviewed by Piker, has referred to the streamer's past comments about the 9/11 terror attacks as "dumb" but has maintained an alliance with him. Piker has also appeared with other progressive political figures, including Rep. Summer Lee and Wisconsin State Assemblywoman Francesca Hong.

Piker also used his platform to criticize Bill Maher, disputing Maher's characterizations of socialism and his views on historical regimes. Piker defended his positive statements about the fall of the USSR and the leadership of Mao Zedong, noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin has also described the collapse of the Soviet Union as a "greatest geopolitical catastrophe."

Weaver's remarks have drawn criticism from various political figures, with one predecessor of Mayor Mamdani characterizing the comments as reflecting "extreme privilege and total detachment from reality."
