Reality television personality Jake Quickenden has avoided a driving ban by presenting evidence of his marriage breakdown to magistrates. Quickenden, known for his appearances on "The X Factor" and as a runner-up on "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!", was facing an automatic disqualification after being caught using his mobile phone while driving.
Magistrates in Colchester, Essex, added the six penalty points to Quickenden's license but granted leniency after he demonstrated that losing his driving privileges would cause exceptional hardship. He explained that due to his recent separation from influencer Sophie Church, he regularly handles school and nursery runs for their two children, as childcare responsibilities have been equally divided. He also stated that he drives the children several hours away to visit his mother, whose mental health relies on these visits.
Quickenden further argued that a driving ban would have a "catastrophic" effect on his career in the entertainment industry. He presented documents detailing current work contracts, including filming for a BBC program and a theater show, and stated that he would face fines for breaching these contracts if he could not drive. The inability to work could also impact the businesses and ticket holders involved in his scheduled performances.
Quickenden, 37, admitted to a "silly mistake" and "lack in judgement" when he was caught using his phone in Norwich on June 17. He was putting his address into a satnav app on his phone, placing it in a holder before being stopped at a roundabout. He had six penalty points already on his license from two speeding offenses in 2023.
The court heard that Quickenden and Church, 33, separated a few months prior to the hearing, after nearly four years of marriage. Quickenden announced the split on social media, stating they had "grown apart" but would focus on co-parenting their children. He also mentioned he was in the process of buying a new home.
Magistrates ordered Quickenden to pay a £692 fine, a £277 victim surcharge, and £120 in costs in addition to the penalty points on his license. He expressed remorse for his actions, stating that it would not happen again.
