Thomas Tuchel reflected on England's significant World Cup victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, calling it a career highlight. This win marked only the third time in 90 competitive matches that Mexico had been defeated at their formidable home ground. Tuchel emphasized the "huge bond" within the squad, particularly highlighting their response to Jordan Henderson's tournament-ending injury. Henderson sustained a broken arm while celebrating the crucial win, an incident that momentarily halted the team's elation.
"This game had so much of what you could wish for," Tuchel stated. "If you needed any proof of what it meant to these players and how they were with each other, it was the moment Jordan fell over and broke his arm. Within a second, the players were there. Every single player was there stopping the celebrations, building a shield, protecting Jordan, not going anywhere, in full empathy. It was so special."
Looking forward, England is scheduled to face World Cup champions Spain on September 26 in their opening match of the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League. Tuchel also has his sights set on the 2028 European Championships. He expressed confidence in his team's potential to end England's long wait for a senior men's trophy, which dates back to 1966. Tuchel believes the team's World Cup campaign has not only solidified his connection with the squad, stating, "it feels like they are my players now," but also created a foundation for future success.
"I'm very excited," Tuchel added. "I think we got another step closer and I think we're there."
