The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has launched a new pilot program called "Gateside by TSA PreCheck" at 13 airports nationwide, allowing non-ticketed individuals to pass through security checkpoints. This initiative is designed to facilitate easier access for those wishing to greet or bid farewell to travelers, meet friends during layovers, or utilize airport dining and shopping facilities.
Eligible participants for the Gateside program include current and former TSA PreCheck members, as well as individuals holding a Known Traveler Number (KTN). Applications should be submitted one to three days prior to the planned visit. The TSA stated that the program aims to "bring back the moments that once defined air travel."
Airports such as Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Diego International Airport are among the initial locations participating in the program. Information from the TSA notes that TSA PreCheck membership, which costs between $76 and $85 for five years, typically results in wait times of less than 10 minutes for 99% of passengers.
The introduction of "Gateside by TSA PreCheck" has elicited varied responses. Some individuals have expressed positive reactions, viewing it as a convenient way to accompany family members, particularly children, to the gate. Conversely, others have voiced concerns about potential overcrowding in already busy terminals, suggesting the program might be unnecessary unless the accompanying person requires assistance.
This program is not entirely novel, as at least 21 other U.S. airports, including Seattle and Orlando, have implemented similar visitor programs. For instance, Seattle's SEA Visitor Pass Program permits up to 300 non-ticketed individuals to clear security daily, though they must use the standard TSA screening line. Internationally, countries like Australia have long-standing policies that allow non-passengers to accompany travelers to boarding areas.
The TSA indicated plans to expand the "Gateside by TSA PreCheck" program to additional locations in the upcoming months.
