President Donald Trump has called on Congress to enact legislation to end birthright citizenship, stating that such a move could bypass the U.S. Supreme Court's recent ruling on the matter. Trump made his appeal via a post on Truth Social, asserting that Congress could address the issue through legislation with presidential support, negating the need for a constitutional amendment.
"The Supreme Court upheld Birthright Citizenship, which is too bad for our Country, but we can easily make it up in Congress through Legislation, with the support of the President, that has now been determined during this process," Trump wrote. "No long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary! Congress should start TODAY to work on ending expensive and unfair to our Country, Birthright Citizenship. They will have my Complete and Total Support!"
Trump had previously issued an executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship on the first day of his second term. Birthright citizenship, established by the 14th Amendment, automatically grants citizenship to individuals born in the U.S., regardless of their parents' immigration status. Trump has described birthright citizenship as "absolutely ridiculous."
During the oral arguments for the case in April, Trump attended, marking the first time a sitting president had done so. He has also claimed that the U.S. is unique in offering birthright citizenship, a statement contradicted by the fact that more than 30 other countries provide some form of it.
