Donald Trump has accepted an invitation to serve as the Honorary Chairman for the 2026 Presidents Cup, the PGA Tour announced. The biennial golf event is set to return to the United States in September, with Medinah Country Club in Chicago hosting the competition between Team USA and an International team.

The role of Honorary Chairman has traditionally been filled by the head of state of the host country. Trump previously held this position in 2017 when the United States secured a 19-11 victory at Liberty National in New Jersey. He presented the trophy to the winning U.S. team at that event.

Other political leaders have also taken on the role in recent years. Barack Obama served as Honorary Chairman in 2009 and 2013. Joe Biden held the position after Trump in 2022, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau fulfilled the role for the 2024 Presidents Cup, which saw a U.S. victory in Canada.

Trump expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event on Truth Social, calling it a "particularly exciting event" with teams that are "loaded" with talent. PGA Tour Commissioner Brian Rolapp stated the organization is grateful for Trump's acceptance, noting the event's tradition of engaging world leaders across political lines. "His participation will help elevate the event on the international stage while furthering our mission of bringing people together through the game of golf," Rolapp said.

However, Trump's involvement has drawn attention from some golf fans who have expressed concerns, referencing a perceived "Trump curse." These fears stem from instances where teams he has supported have lost. Notably, during his attendance at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black last year, the U.S. team faced a significant deficit. He also attended a New York Knicks game during the NBA Finals where they lost, and a Washington Commanders NFL game where they were defeated.

Reactions on social media included predictions of a U.S. loss, with some fans attributing potential negative outcomes to his past attendance at sporting events. The 2026 Presidents Cup is scheduled to take place from September 24-27.
