President Donald Trump signed autographs for fans at the U.S. Open on Sunday evening and left New York later that night to return to Washington, D.C.
Trump arrived at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens less than an hour before the men's final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, stepped onto the balcony of the Rolex corporate suite, waved to the crowd and mouthed “thank you,” according to photographs from the event. He stood and saluted as the national anthem played and received a mixture of cheers and boos as cameras panned to his location.
Photographs showed fans approaching security around Trump and asking him to sign hats and other items. Trump spent several minutes autographing items and was photographed tossing a hat after signing it. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff were visible in some images alongside the president.
The match ended with Alcaraz defeating Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Trump was seen cheering for Alcaraz after the final point. Alcaraz, 22, added the U.S. Open title to his previous Grand Slam wins and now has six major titles; the Australian Open is the only major he has not won.
This marked Trump's first visit to the Grand Slam tournament since before he first entered the White House; he was seen at the U.S. Open in September 2015, months after announcing his first presidential campaign. Event photographs indicated he left the venue and headed back to Washington later Sunday evening.
There were no immediate statements from the White House about the visit. The appearance came amid a wide range of reactions from the crowd during the match, recorded in live broadcasts and photography from the final at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
