President Donald Trump and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., are advocating for Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, to be appointed to fill his vacant Senate seat in South Carolina. Both have reportedly spoken with Nordone about the possibility.
Trump publicly urged South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster to appoint Nordone, describing it as a "fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly." McMaster is expected to announce his decision Monday afternoon, with Scott also anticipated to attend the press conference.
If appointed, Nordone's role would be temporary. The filing deadline to run for a full six-year Senate term is July 21, with a special election primary scheduled for Aug. 11. Several South Carolina politicians have expressed interest in the seat.
Nordone has no prior political office experience. She has worked in vocational rehabilitation, assisting individuals with disabilities in finding employment. She is a mother of two.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, who served in Congress for three decades, had a close bond with his sister, particularly after their parents died within a year of each other when he was in his early 20s. Graham became Nordone's legal guardian and caretaker, a role she has often credited him with fulfilling, noting he helped raise her and ensure her education.
Nordone has previously appeared in Graham's campaign materials, speaking about the significant role he played in her upbringing. She is currently processing her brother's recent passing.
