Critics assailed Donald Trump for a Truth Social post on Monday in which he claimed that "oil prices will drop precipitously, like everything else is dropping (but more!), when we WIN the war with Iran." He added that gas prices would fall to "Three Dollars a gallon, but ultimately, below Two Dollars a gallon."

Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who has become a vocal critic of Trump, pointed out what she described as a contradiction with his past assertions of victory in the conflict. "Wait, I thought we won the war like 50 times already!!!" she wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Greene also noted that gas prices were "the highest it’s ever been in history for Labor Day weekend," sarcastically adding, "It’s so much winning we can hardly take it."

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) echoed this sentiment, questioning Trump's claims about Iran's military status. "'When we WIN'??? Didn’t Trump say Iran is a 'failed nation' and 'dead'?" Lieu posted. "Didn’t Trump say Iran’s military is 'totally destroyed' and 'completely defeated?' Then why haven’t we won the war with Iran yet? Because Trump lies his ass off. November is coming."

The Republican accountability group Republicans Against Trump noted that Labor Day gas prices reached a record $4.14 a gallon, an increase of nearly $1 from the previous year and the highest price ever recorded for the holiday.

Gregory Brew, an analyst with Eurasia Group, summarized the situation by stating that Trump's post acknowledged "1) oil prices are high, 2) it’s because of the war with Iran, 3) the war has not ended, 4) the US has not won, yet."
