Former President Donald Trump shared a map on social media that renamed New Mexico as "New America," a move that drew sharp criticism from Democratic officials representing the state. The renaming occurred days after similar incidents where Trump suggested renaming Lake Ontario and the Strait of Hormuz.
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham responded to the map, stating, “New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate—it’s been ours since before the United States existed.” She suggested that Trump's renaming activities were an attempt to "distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran,” and rising costs of consumer goods.
Former Secretary of the Interior and candidate for New Mexico Governor, Deb Haaland, echoed the sentiment, asserting, “You can’t be serious. New Mexico is not for renaming. Not up for sale.”
Senator Ben Ray Luján also voiced opposition, insisting, “it’s New Mexico, always has been and always will be,” and referred to Trump as "corrupt."
However, some Republican allies of Trump, such as Senator Mike Lee of Utah, expressed a different view, calling the potential new name "kind of catchy."
