Former President Donald Trump has called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune to extend the Senate's session, demanding action on the SAVE America Act or the termination of the legislative filibuster. Trump expressed his view on social media, stating that Thune should not permit the Senate to adjourn until these objectives are met.
"John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to ‘leave town’ until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER, where Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The Senate is currently in the final two weeks of its session before an extended recess, with lawmakers scheduled to return to Washington on September 14. Tensions have reportedly surfaced between Trump and Thune regarding the former president's push for his voting bill, which has been described as controversial. Thune has previously indicated that Republican senators lack sufficient votes to advance the bill through standard legislative procedures.
Additionally, Thune has prioritized efforts to avoid a government shutdown, with current funding set to expire at 11:59 p.m. ET on September 30. Such a shutdown could potentially have negative implications for Republican standing in the upcoming November midterm elections.
