Former President Donald Trump has announced a pledge to provide adult U.S. citizens with a $5,000 "Trump dividend" should Republicans secure victories in upcoming House and Senate elections. Trump suggested that the economic stimulus would be financed through "tremendous economic success" driven by his policies, contrasting this approach with Democratic economic strategies.
During his previous term, Trump authorized two rounds of congressionally-approved stimulus checks in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also referenced a $1,776 "Warrior Dividend" for military service members, funded by a congressionally approved housing supplement.
However, the proposal has drawn skepticism. U.S. Representative Chip Roy of Texas questioned the financial underpinnings of such a plan, stating, "I would like to know how they would plan to pay for … back of envelope … well over $1 trillion." The Democratic National Committee has also raised doubts, asserting that Trump and Republicans have made similar promises of rebate checks in the past that did not materialize.
This $5,000 dividend proposal follows previous unfulfilled economic promises from Trump. These include a promised $2,000 tariff dividend, a plan to return 20% of Dogecoin savings to taxpayers, and an endorsement of depositing $1,000 or more into eligible Americans' health savings accounts. The tariff dividends and Dogecoin savings plan were never enacted. Legislation for the health savings accounts, intended as a Republican alternative to extending enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits that expired at the end of 2025, failed in the Senate. The administration is reportedly preparing a separate $500 rebate for some ACA enrollees who do not receive subsidies.
