Trump Media & Technology, the company operating the Truth Social platform, announced a $238 million loss for the second quarter ending in June, a substantial increase from the $23.8 million loss reported the previous year. The company also revealed plans to shift its strategy, abandoning ventures into areas like online betting and cryptocurrency to concentrate on its core social media mission.
Kevin McGurn, the new chief executive, stated that the company made a "disciplined choice to pivot" to invest more resources into its primary initiatives. This strategic refocusing includes the introduction of Truth API, a service that offers Wall Street trading firms early access to data from top posters on the Truth Social platform, including former President Donald Trump.
McGurn defended the Truth API service, comparing it to established practices in the financial and media industries where companies provide licensed real-time data through commercial APIs. He noted that this service aims to provide data to entities like high-frequency trading firms, data center companies, news organizations, and developers of large language models. The service is priced between $60,000 and $100,000 per month, and the company has already secured 10 customers.
Despite the significant quarterly loss, largely attributed to unrealized paper losses from holdings in bitcoin and Cronos cryptocurrency, Trump Media reported $1.7 billion in revenue for the second quarter, more than double its revenue from the same period last year. The company also possesses over $400 million in cash and short-term investments, alongside $1.2 billion in bitcoin and related assets. However, it faces $1 billion in debt from special convertible notes due in 2028, with lenders holding an option to demand repayment in November.
One previously announced venture, a focus on nuclear fusion, will continue. Trump Media anticipates closing a merger with energy company TAE Technologies by the end of the year, with McGurn identifying the fusion business as a key driver of long-term value.
Concerns have been raised by watchdogs and Democrats regarding the Truth API service, with some viewing it as a potential avenue for Trump to profit from the presidency. McGurn has dismissed these criticisms, asserting the practice is standard across various industries.
