Former President Donald Trump announced Thursday that a recently negotiated civilian nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia is entirely dependent on Riyadh's commitment to join the Abraham Accords and normalize relations with Israel.
Trump stated on the social media platform Truth Social that the civilian nuclear deal, which involves the U.S. Department of Energy and pertains to non-military uses, will only be approved if Saudi Arabia agrees to become part of the Abraham Accords. He clarified that the agreement "pertains only to non-military use such as the ones that Iran and UAE (and others) already have" and that "There will be no enrichment of material!"
The United States, according to Trump, does not oppose civilian nuclear facilities that do not involve enrichment.
The Abraham Accords, a series of normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations, were signed in 2020. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other Saudi leaders have previously indicated that normalization with Israel would require concrete steps toward the establishment of a Palestinian state.
