Former Trump administration Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner has sharply criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's housing affordability agenda, asserting that policies such as rent freezes and increased taxes on corporations and the wealthy would stifle private investment and lead to an exodus of businesses and residents.

Turner, speaking in an interview, contended that Mamdani's "socialist progressive policies" are destined to fail and would ultimately worsen the affordability crisis in one of the nation's largest and most expensive housing markets. He contrasted Mamdani's approach with the Trump administration's strategy, which he described as focused on deregulation, increasing housing supply, and encouraging private sector involvement. "People want to go a place where they can get the government out of the way. The government is not the answer. The private sector is the answer," Turner stated.

Mayor Mamdani has positioned housing affordability as a central tenet of his administration, advocating for stronger tenant protections, rent stabilization for certain apartments, and increased public investment in affordable housing projects. His proposals aim to counteract rising housing costs for working families and address the city's housing shortage.

Turner suggested that states like Florida and Texas are better positioned to tackle affordability issues because they have prioritized increasing home construction and reducing regulatory hurdles that drive up development costs. He urged New York City to adopt a similar strategy, emphasizing that easing regulations and boosting supply are key to making housing more accessible for homeowners and builders alike.

Mamdani's office did not respond to requests for comment regarding Turner's criticisms. The differing approaches to housing policy in New York City highlight a broader national debate on how best to address urban affordability challenges.
