President Donald Trump indicated Sunday that he has decided on a form of retaliation against Canada concerning the wildfire smoke that has blanketed parts of the United States. When asked by a reporter on Air Force One if he had determined a penalty, Trump replied, "I have, yeah. And you’ll find out about it soon."
This statement follows previous threats from the president and several Republican lawmakers directed at Canada. While Canadian fire agencies have historically assisted the U.S. during American wildfires, the current situation, with over 800 wildfires burning across Canada, has prompted a different response from the U.S. president.
The specific nature of the potential penalty remains unclear. However, it could be in addition to the 50% tariff Trump announced last month on most Canadian goods. At that time, Trump stated the tariff was a response to what he described as discrimination against U.S. cars, alcohol, and dairy products. Trump has also had a history of criticizing Canada and its leaders.
Earlier in the year, Trump reportedly withdrew an offer for Canada to participate in his "board of peace" initiative for Gaza. This decision followed an ovation Prime Minister Mark Carney received in Davos for a speech advocating for "middle powers" to challenge the United States.
