President Trump on Friday highlighted a substantial decrease in violent crime rates across the U.S., citing a new FBI Uniform Crime Report that indicates the largest one-year drop on record. Trump presented the findings as a testament to his administration's law-and-order agenda.
The 2025 Uniform Crime Report showed a 9.3% decrease in violent crime from the previous year. Specific categories also saw marked declines: murder down 18.1%, rape down 7.6%, robbery down 18.5%, aggravated assault down 7.2%, and motor vehicle theft down 22.7%.
"Every single number is the lowest number in recorded history," Trump stated during an event at the Nassau County Police Academy on Long Island. "We have the best crime record in recorded history."
Trump asserted that his administration implemented policies that contributed to the reduction in crime, including efforts to address illegal immigration and the deployment of the National Guard to cities such as Washington D.C. He framed these actions as ending "the war on police" and declaring "a very strong war on crime."
During his remarks, Trump also directed criticism toward Democratic policies and politicians, referring to them as "Dumbocrats." He specifically challenged the concept of defunding the police, questioning its popularity.
FBI Director Kash Patel, who joined Trump at the event, stated in his introduction of the report that the "2025 crime statistics exemplify the great work this FBI and our law enforcement partners on the front line are doing to crush violent crime."
Crime rates nationally have seen a downward trend since their peak during the COVID-19 pandemic. Trump's campaign is leveraging these new statistics as Republicans aim to maintain control of Congress. He has also linked criticism of Democrats to a claim that the party supports criminals.
Trump also used the occasion to campaign for New York's Republican gubernatorial candidate, Bruce Blakeman, and criticized Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul's record on crime, calling it "very, very bad" and "a nightmare."
"But Hochul and the radical left stand with the gang members, child predators, and violent felons. We stand with hardworking New Yorkers," Trump said. "We stand with the great people of law enforcement."
