President Donald Trump paused his speech Friday at the Nassau County Police Academy on Long Island to comfort the parents of 12-year-old Jacob Freytes, who was recently killed by a stray bullet in the Bronx. Freytes was shot and killed late last month while sitting on his bike outside a bodega.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt shared on social media that President Trump exited the stage to embrace Migdalia Martinez and retired NYPD Sergeant Jesus Freytes, noting the moment was "beautifully impromptu." Trump had been discussing his administration's efforts to reduce crime when he mentioned Freytes' death.

"Two weeks ago, a 12-year-old boy named Jacob Freytes — You read about this one? — was tragically shot and killed by a stray bullet fired by a repeat offender in a gun battle," Trump stated. He identified Freytes as the son of a "loving mom and a retired New York City police detective" and inquired if they were present. After they confirmed their attendance, Trump left the stage to offer his condolences.

Following the embrace, Trump returned to the podium, remarking, "Horrible story. What a horrible thing. But we're going after them. These are bad, sick people."

Freytes' death has spurred legislative action, with Republicans introducing "Jacob's Law" in the New York Legislature. This proposed law aims to impose harsher penalties on individuals whose reckless actions lead to the death of a child.

Migdalia Martinez recounted the tragic event on "Fox & Friends," describing receiving a call about her son being shot and her urgent efforts to reach him. "When I got there, I just seen my boy gone," she said.

Police have arrested William Ferrer, 45, in connection with Freytes' death. He faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder, and has pleaded not guilty. According to the New York Post, Ferrer has a criminal record spanning over 25 years, including past charges for drunk driving, drug possession, menacing, and criminal contempt.
