Viral videos from the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington D.C. on Sunday captured what appeared to be an 'intense' conversation between former President Donald Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump. Close aide Natalie Harp was also present, standing nearby and later engaging with Trump.
Body language expert Judi James and lip reader Nicola Hickling analyzed footage of the exchange. Initial clips showed the couple in a seemingly affectionate mood, but a shift occurred, with Melania's smile vanishing and her mouth becoming closed and downturned, according to James.
Hickling interpreted Melania's whispered words as, "That is private and valuable text." When Trump inquired, "Was it enough," Melania reportedly replied, "I don't know." Trump then insisted, "Then I need to see it." Melania appeared to try and disengage, whispering, "Donald, listen, I'm gonna go," but Trump interrupted, "Listen, she asked you not to close the door." When Melania asked "why," Trump cautioned, "Its bad news, but its a bad timing Melania."
Melania's subsequent sharp hair swish was characterized by James as an "alert signal" reflecting impatience. Hickling deciphered the end of her whispered instruction as, "obviously I'll see her and talk to her in the morning." Despite the tense atmosphere, James noted that Melania's focus seemed aimed at securing agreement, supported by Trump's affirming nods.
Any perceived strain dissipated as Melania prepared to leave. James described a "farewell tie–sign" as Melania touched her husband's knee with a smile before standing. Trump indicated he would remain, stating, "I'll stay here, I'm talking."
Following Melania's departure, Natalie Harp moved into frame. James observed Harp using a smartphone to capture Trump's attention, positioning herself as an eager assistant. Trump then gestured to take the device, saying, "gimme that." According to Hickling's analysis, Trump showed the screen to an unidentified male guest, asking, "see what I mean," and the guest affirmed his understanding. Trump then instructed Harp to send the information to the guest, saying, "can you send him the information?" to which she replied, "Sure, president."
Trump reportedly praised Harp, saying, "I tell her immediately she gets it done, we need her, she is good for us." Harp, a 35-year-old former One America News anchor, has gained a reputation for her devotion to the former President. Her presence at the Grand Prix, where she was also seen conversing with Eric Trump, occurred at a time when she and Melania are infrequently seen together. This public appearance for Melania Trump followed a month-long absence from joint events with her husband, marking her second public appearance of the week. The event also included honorary laps by the presidential motorcade, with Trump waving the green flag to officially start the race.
The shared appearance also follows recent political friction. Last week, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff made remarks at a Georgia rally that the White House described as "absolute trash," regarding Trump's working relationship with Harp.
