President Donald Trump, alongside Education Secretary Linda McMahon, announced initiatives Monday aimed at expanding school choice and empowering parents to have greater control over their children's education. The administration characterized these efforts as a "hard reset" for American education, seeking to return focus to common sense and student preparedness for future success.

During an event in the White House Rose Garden, Trump stated, "We're putting the parents back in charge." He emphasized that parents are the ones who best understand and care for their children and should therefore direct their educational choices. The president asserted that despite current education spending, student outcomes could be improved, and families need more diverse schooling options.

Key among the announced measures is the Education Freedom Tax Credit, scheduled to take effect in 2027. This initiative will offer taxpayers a credit of up to $1,700 for eligible donations to organizations that provide scholarships for educational expenses. These scholarships can cover costs such as private school tuition, tutoring, school fees, and classroom supplies, and can also benefit students attending public schools. The White House estimates that approximately 52 million students could be eligible for this credit.

Additionally, changes have been made to 529 education savings plans, allowing families to withdraw up to $20,000 annually for K-12 expenses, effectively doubling the prior limit. These adjustments are intended to provide greater financial flexibility for families pursuing various educational paths.

Several parents shared their perspectives at the event, highlighting how expanded school choice could positively impact their families. Caleb Griffith, a father of five from North Carolina, including two children with special needs, explained that the Education Freedom Tax Credit would provide his children with access to necessary services for their success during their formative years. He stressed the singular opportunity parents have to educate their children, who represent America's future.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon described the administration's goal as a "hard reset" in American education, aiming to return to foundational principles. She stated that the Trump administration is steering education back to its core purpose: serving students and preparing them for successful futures.
