In December 2025, Trinity College Dublin’s University Philosophical Society, known as ‘the Phil,’ added Twitch streamer Hasan Piker to its list of honorary patrons. Piker’s inclusion places him among individuals such as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu, President Joe Biden, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, primatologist Jane Goodall, and filmmaker Martin Scorsese.

Piker, a Turkish-American political commentator, has a history of making widely debated statements. Among his controversial remarks are comments suggesting America ‘deserved’ the 9/11 terrorist attacks, praise for Mao Zedong, and suggestions regarding the treatment of wealthy individuals convicted of date rape. He also made a comment about Miley Cyrus when she was a teenager that drew criticism.

In 2023, a resurfaced clip of Piker’s comments about date rapists and the minimization of sexual violence during Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel drew significant backlash. The remarks about sexual violence, particularly in the context of the Me Too movement, were cited by critics as disqualifying him from any honor.

These controversies preceded his honorary patronage by Trinity College. In 2024, U.S. Congressman Ritchie Torres penned a letter to Twitch and its parent company Amazon, urging action against Piker’s content. The online discourse surrounding Piker's statements, including the remarks about 9/11, had circulated for over a year before the student society voted to honor him.

His statement that America ‘deserved’ the 9/11 attacks, made in 2019, was later walked back by Piker on his uncle Cenk Uygur’s show, ‘The Young Turks.’ Piker described his comments as ‘inappropriate’ but maintained that his underlying point about U.S. foreign policy ‘blowback’ still stood. The remarks drew particular attention given that at least seven Irish citizens were among the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks.

Doubts about Piker’s sincerity resurfaced when a framed September 12, 2001, New York Times front page was spotted in his streaming studio. Piker described it as a ‘never forget’ gesture, while critics interpreted it as provocative.

Piker’s involvement in U.S. electoral politics began late in 2025 with support for Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani’s New York mayoral campaign. Mamdani, who won the election, later distanced himself from Piker, calling the 9/11 comment ‘objectionable and reprehensible.’ Piker was reportedly denied entry to Mamdani’s victory celebration.

Piker later aligned with Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan, campaigning with him during the primary. Following El-Sayed’s nomination, Piker made remarks about American Jews and Israel that critics interpreted as shifting blame for antisemitic violence onto Jewish individuals. El-Sayed subsequently stated that he alone spoke for his campaign.

A July 2026 CNN report, fronted by Irish correspondent Donie O’Sullivan, highlighted Piker’s political influence. In the report, Piker predicted a ‘zero per cent chance’ the 2028 Democratic nominee would be pro-Israel. Critics described the report as an ‘infomercial.’

Piker has also been linked to the Irish rap group Kneecap. He traveled to Belfast in late 2025 to meet with the members. Months later, in March 2026, Piker joined Kneecap, along with Jeremy Corbyn and Code Pink, on a trip to Cuba to deliver aid amidst the country’s power outages. During the trip, Piker faced scrutiny over his attire, with some observers questioning the cost of his clothing in the context of Cuba’s economic situation.

His rhetoric has repeatedly drawn accusations of antisemitism. He has made comments downplaying the significance of rapes on October 7, referred to accounts of sexual violence as ‘rape fantasies,’ called Orthodox Jews ‘inbred,’ and referred to Israel as ‘Jewish ISIS.’ Most recently, he stated that American Jews who align themselves with Israel ‘should not be surprised’ if action is taken against them.

Defenders of Piker often argue that clips of his statements are taken out of context. However, Ritchie Torres has labeled him ‘the poster child for the post-October 7 outbreak of antisemitism in America.’

In March 2025, Piker received a one-week suspension from Twitch for repeatedly using the word ‘cracker,’ which he argued was being treated with disproportionate seriousness compared to anti-white slurs.

Piker’s past remarks have also extended to political figures. In April 2026, during a debate at Yale, he called the fall of the USSR ‘one of the greatest catastrophes of the 20th century,’ arguing that U.S. foreign policy had operated without a rival superpower. He also expressed a lack of patriotism for America.

In November 2025, during a trip to China, Piker was filmed near Tiananmen Square commenting that Mao Zedong was ‘one of the great leaders of this world,’ while acknowledging ‘a lot of excesses.’ He also produced a ‘Mao suit’ during this trip, which he later wore to a College Democrats’ summer convention in July 2026.

Piker’s online presence has translated into significant financial success. Estimates place his net worth between $18 million and $32 million, derived from Twitch subscriptions, YouTube revenue, and merchandise. At his peak, he reportedly earned substantial monthly income streaming up to ten hours a day.

His audience, which skews young and male, is considered influential by Democratic strategists. CNN has compared his reach to ‘AM radio for Generation Z,’ highlighting his ability to engage a demographic that has been drifting politically.

Despite the controversies, Piker's streaming numbers have remained largely unaffected. In December 2025, Trinity College students chose to honor him with a Gold Medal of Honorary Patronage, placing his name alongside other distinguished figures in the institution's history.

In an earlier incident in October 2025, Piker faced accusations regarding the treatment of his rescue dog, Kaya. A stream showed the dog yelping near her bed, leading viewers to accuse Piker of using a shock collar. Piker denied the allegation, stating the dog had caught a dewclaw. PETA commented that they hoped his denial was true, as shock collars are considered dangerous and cruel.

Piker’s career has seen other suspensions, including a one-week ban in December 2021 for repeated use of the word ‘cracker.’ His sympathy for Luigi Mangione, who is charged with the murder of United Healthcare’s CEO, has also drawn attention.
