Jonathan Bruney, a triathlete and coach, recounted his terrifying encounter with a 5-foot alligator in the Savannah River while preparing for an Ironman competition. The incident occurred during a training session for his athletes near the Georgia/South Carolina border.
Bruney described the moment as a "fight for survival" after feeling a bump on his right elbow while swimming. Initially mistaking the alligator for a log, he soon realized the gravity of the situation. "I wasn’t even thinking gator. I’m thinking, ‘Okay, big log floating in the river.’ But then I looked to my right. I’m like, ‘Okay, this is a lot worse than a log,’" Bruney told OutKick.
Recalling information he had learned from "Shark Week," Bruney knew that the alligator's eyes were sensitive. After attempting to punch the animal with little effect, he swam up towards its snout and squeezed its eye, prompting the alligator to release its grip. He believes this action saved his arm from potentially being severed.
Upon reaching the shore, Bruney's immediate concern was the safety of his athletes. A friend used a cord from a swim buoy to help stop Bruney's bleeding while they waited for emergency services. Police and EMTs arrived quickly, with officers applying a makeshift bandage before paramedics took over. Bruney reported feeling dizzy and his arm growing cold before receiving medical attention.
Despite the traumatic experience, Bruney remains determined to continue his training and competition. Doctors have cleared him to resume his activities, and he expressed no hesitation about returning to the water. "We’ll be back in there," he stated, emphasizing that letting the incident deter him was not an option.
