Travelers are being warned about a new scam targeting them this summer, according to a report from Consumer Affairs. Scammers are reportedly posing as airline customer service representatives by using fake phone numbers that appear in online search results.
When flights are delayed or canceled, travelers often search for an airline's customer service number. Scammers are exploiting this by creating misleading websites, online advertisements, and manipulating search engine listings with false information. They then answer calls from these fake numbers, pretending to be airline employees.
These scammers may falsely claim to issue tickets or threaten travelers with additional fees, all in an effort to obtain sensitive personal information such as credit card and passport details. To avoid falling victim to these scams, it is advised to only use phone numbers found in an airline's official app, on its verified website, or within a confirmation email.
The report comes amid existing travel concerns, including high fuel prices, inflation affecting popular destinations, and lengthy airport wait times.
