A former Marine recruit who was transitioning to live as a transgender woman pleaded guilty this week to the murder of a hiker, a plea deal that spared her the death penalty.
Zion Teasley, 25, admitted to fatally stabbing Lauren Heike, 29, a beauty technician, 15 times on a Phoenix hiking trail in 2023. The deal means Teasley will serve the rest of her life in prison. Heike's body was discovered by neighbors near a barbed wire fence at the foot of the trail.
According to a police report, Teasley wrote in her diary prior to the murder about struggling with gender identity and sexuality, believing it conflicted with her Christian faith. "I want to live a life of serving god, but how can I with these and other sins in the way," she wrote. She also expressed depression over seeing "beautiful" women because she felt trapped as a man.
When initially interviewed by police, Teasley denied seeing Heike, but stated, "That's what I would want to look like." Teasley was later identified by DNA found on Heike's shoes, matching Teasley, who was on probation at the time for prior offenses including armed robbery.
Surveillance footage showed Teasley stalking Heike before the attack. Teasley was arrested days later at her home, about a mile from the trail.
Teasley's former boss told police that she had been aggressive toward female employees and had stolen clothing matching that worn by the killer. Teasley had joined the U.S. Marine Corps. recruit training in March 2019 but left three months later before completing boot camp.
Heike's family stated they supported the plea agreement, as it allowed them to avoid the trauma of a trial. "While no sentence will ever bring Lauren back, we are relieved knowing that he will never be released," the family said in a statement. "He will never again have the opportunity to harm another person or cause another family to experience the unimaginable grief and trauma that ours has endured."
